Network Architecture
All Manufacturing Facilities Need to Update Their Architecture
- Are there questions about connecting to your corporate network?
- Is there a current map of your existing network infrastructure?
- Have you investigated the next generation firewalls?
Plant network to corporate network design
Since the 1990s, SCADA and industrial control systems have been changing their old legacy protocols and slow dedicated circuits to a converged TCP/IP system that allows protocols such as SCADA, voice, video, security, and corporate data to coexist. This coexistence is not a simple process as there are many constraints in design as well as new regulations to incorporate. For many facilities, now is the time to review the current architecture scheme and determine the next steps. While this convergence and streamlining of architecture can be expensive, delaying may cause a network breach, or loss of intellectual property.
Architecture designed to protect
Firewalls have changed greatly recently. Traditional packet-filtering firewalls or stateful inspection firewalls are no longer sufficient. There is a new generation of firewalls that incorporate access control, application visibility and control, IPS, URL filtering, and anti-virus — all needed at any manufacturing facility. In addition these must be configured to communicate with Active Directory (AD) on the corporate network.
